Ordinary life insurance is commonly defined as a policy that pays a beneficiary at the end of a policy period or at death. In effect, it is the insurance on the life of the insured for a fixed amount at a definite premium that is paid each year in the same amount (or by agreed annual increment amount) during the entire period of the insured.

GLICO LIFE’s ordinary life insurance can be a pure protection policy or a combination of pure protection insurance and investment. In the event of death, accidents or hospitalization, a policyholder receives agreed money payout on a pure protection policy. At the end of an agreed period of insurance with a combination policy, the policyholder receives money payout from the investment made out of the investment premiums contributed. Returns on investment are usually very high compared to other investments Products.


GLICO CRITICAL ILLNESS PLAN (GCIP) is a pure protection policy specifically designed to provide cover for individuals and their family in the event of critical illness or dread diseases. GCIP serves as a Critical Illness Health Policy [CIHP] which will pay out a lump sum to the policyholder if a critical illness event occurs. The minimum entry age is 18 years and the maximum entry age is 59 years.

Critical illness or dread diseases are diseases found to be serious and life threatening such as heart attack, cancer, stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, among others. The road to treatments and recovery for such illnesses can be a slow and costly one.

Depending on the age of the applicant, the minimum sum assured amounts is GH10, 000.00. Applicants can select sum assured amounts of in multiples of GHC 10,000.00 to an agreed maximum amount.

Benefits under GCIP covers among others, the listed critical illness below:

  • Kidney failure: Chronic irreversible total failure of both kidneys’ as a result of which regular renal dialysis is instituted.
  • Heart Attack: The death of a portion of the heart muscle as a result of inadequate blood supply.
  • Stroke: Any cerebrovascular incident producing neurological sequelae
  • Coronary artery disease requiring surgery: The undergoing of heart surgery to correct narrowing or blockage of two or more coronary arteries with bypass grafts
  • Cancer: The presence of a malignant tumor, characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of malignant with the invasion of normal tissue.
  • Paralysis: Paralysis of both legs and arms or one leg and one arm resulting in the permanent loss-of the use of these limbs.
  • Kidney failure: Chronic irreversible total failure of both kidneys’ as a result of which regular renal dialysis is instituted.
  • Major organ transplant: The actual undergoing as a recipient of a heart, heart and lung, liver, pancreas, kidney or bone marrow transplant.

  • Multiple Sclerosis: The unequivocal diagnosis ‘ of Multiple Sclerosis made by a consultant neurologist, and many more critical illnesses.

Premium Payment
The premium payable is dependent on the destination of travel, duration of cover and the age of the applicant. Premium is in Ghana Cedis.
